About Campaign for Nature

Campaign for Nature (CfN) is a global initiative dedicated to securing the protection and conservation of at least 30% of the world's land and oceans by 2030. We work with governments, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, scientists, conservation organizations, and philanthropic partners to achieve ambitious conservation commitments.

Our Story: From ambition to global agreement

Established in 2018 to advance ambitious global conservation targets and rights-based approaches to biodiversity protection, we played a leading role in securing the inclusion of the global 30x30 target and stronger recognition of the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities within the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Since the Framework's adoption in 2022, we have continued to work with partners to help turn international commitments into action by building political will, promoting rights-based conservation, mobilizing finance, and helping countries develop and implement ambitious, country-led plans to conserve biodiversity and sustain the natural systems upon which people and economies depend.

Our Work: From Global Leadership to National Action

Campaign for Nature is a nimble partner, an active campaigner, and a trusted convener, helping create the conditions necessary for global conservation commitments to succeed. Often working behind the scenes, our strategic focus is designed to have an outsized impact, helping to shift systems, scale solutions, and put the world on track to deliver 30x30. Global agreements only succeed when countries have the capacity, plans and finance to act. Our work creates and supports these conditions across four focus areas.

1

Encouraging Global Leadership

We work with heads of state, ministers, multilateral institutions, philanthropies, and other influential leaders to elevate biodiversity conservation as a global political and economic priority. Through strategic advocacy, communications, and coalition-building, we help create the momentum needed for ambitious action.

Selected Outcomes:

We partnered with Costa Rica and France to create and support the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC), which currently has 124 member countries and was critical to achieving the successful adoption of the 30x30 target in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Promoting Rights-Based Conservation

We partner with Indigenous Peoples and local communities to advance their rights, strengthen their governance, and support their self-determined priorities. We work closely with partners including the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB), the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC), the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), and many others to ensure conservation supports both people and nature.

Selected Outcomes:

We worked with RRI in 2022 to establish the Community Land Rights and Conservation Finance Initiative (CLARIFI) to deliver funding to Indigenous Peoples and local communities. In the first three years, $24 million was deployed to 110 organizations (including 40 women-led organizations) in 28 countries, covering over 30 million hectares.

3

Mobilizing Finance

We work to increase the amount of international and domestic finance available for biodiversity conservation, 30x30 implementation, and Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Our work has contributed to major conservation finance initiatives and international commitments that are helping mobilize billions of dollars for nature.

Selected Outcomes:

  • Advised the German government on its establishment and implementation of the Legacy Landscapes Fund (LLF). Over $400 million secured, for 15 project sites covering 484,958 km².
  • Supported the launch of the Protecting Our Planet Challenge (POPC), securing a $5 billion commitment from 10 philanthropies.
  • Provided strategic and communications support to the Brazilian government in its development of the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF).

Enabling On-the-Ground Implementation

Campaign for Nature serves as the secretariat of SPACES, a flagship program that helps countries in the Global South translate global commitments into meaningful action. Through SPACES, countries develop costed, country-led plans that align biodiversity, climate, and socioeconomic priorities, alongside financing strategies to support implementation.

Selected Outcomes:

  • Dominican Republic – Added 86,165 km² to its marine protected areas, pushing ocean coverage to 30.8%
  • Panama – Expanded Banco Volcán by 75,800 km²
  • Madagascar – Designated 17 new territorial and 4 marine protected areas (2 million hectares) with 10 management delegation decisions issued to ensure proper stewardship
  • Sierra Leone – Leveraged its 30x30 national roadmap to raise $80 million for early implementation actions

Our Team

Our team is intentionally small, combining dedicated staff with specialized consultants and experts who bring deep experience in policy, finance, conservation planning, communications, and Indigenous Peoples and local communities rights. This lean and flexible model allows us to operate at the highest levels while remaining focused on achieving measurable impact on the ground.

Working with a distinguished Global Steering Committee of former heads of state, ministers, and other global leaders, we help create the political will, financing, partnerships, and implementation capacity needed to achieve 30x30.
